RE2PACK

Development of a recycled and recyclable flexible film with advanced properties

RE2PACK aims to develop a sustainable mono-material flexible packaging made entirely from recycled material that achieves the same functionalities as those achieved with virgin material.

To achieve this purpose, the project will determine the optimal combination of recycled material and enhance its barrier properties with coatings and additives. Thanks to the use of mono-materials, full recyclability is ensured and, in addition, by using 100% recycled starting materials, full circularity of resources is ensured.

Plastic production has been increasing steadily since the 1950s,1 reaching 368 million tonnes in 2019, yet only 14% of plastic packaging used worldwide is recycled, and 72% is not recovered at all: 40% is dumped in landfills and 32% escapes the collection system. The great challenge for society is therefore to promote the recycling, reuse and recovery of these plastic materials. Sustainability in packaging is thus a megatrend that is shaping the packaging industry, as consumers are increasingly concerned about the environment and the impact of packaging leakage. In response, new and more stringent sustainability regulations are emerging with increasing frequency on multiple fronts.

To achieve this purpose, the project will determine the optimal combination of recycled material and enhance its barrier properties with coatings and additives.

Thanks to the use of mono-materials, full recyclability is ensured and, in addition, the use of 100% recycled starting materials ensures full circularity of resources.
