Digital twin technology for the optimization of agrifood value chains

The EU agri-food sector is facing losses and inefficiencies as business experts move between environmental protection, the need for safe and healthy food, and sustainable production.

BBTWINS will develop and validate innovative digital twins in two use cases in the meat and fruit sectors in Greece and Spain. The project team will apply a multi-agent approach and integrate artificial intelligence, internet of things, software analytics, blockchain and strategic and operational logistics solutions into a single platform.

BBTWINS will increase biomass availability, resource efficiency and sustainability for the bio-based industry, reduce biomass losses in feedstock supply, enable longer storage time before processing and validate three new products for the industry.

SPECIFIC GOALS

  • Contribute to meeting the growing demand for quality food more efficiently by improving the quantity, quality, availability and sustainability of raw materials for bio-based operations. This will also improve the ability to shape food production and adapt accordingly.
  • Help reduce existing waste, currently a major problem, by ensuring that raw materials for production are used more efficiently, effectively and with less waste. It will help maximise the use of existing resources while ensuring the highest level of circularity of use. By optimising transport routes and reducing the amount of biomass transported, it will also have a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions.
